1. The smell of Coppertone Waterbabies To quote master wordsmith Nelly, “It’s getting hot in hurr.” Today was 89 degrees! Last week it was 25 degrees cooler, but this week it’s starting to feel a lot like summer. I try to take Connor out nice and early to wear her little booty out, but before we go, I slather this sunscreen all over her and myself. This stuff always makes me think of summer and long lazy days at the beach. I love it. 2. Turn and learn I mentioned this Ted Talk in the last Saturday Surfing, but if you missed it, please watch it now. Or whenever you can. I think it’s so helpful! The gist of it is to think of the things in your life that you’d like to change as opportunities to learn. Like, for example, if you’re bad at time management (LIKE ME!!!), instead of thinking, “I must be broken. I’m so bad at time management. There’s for sure something wrong with me,” think of it instead as a chance for you to learn some of the myriad of helpful time management tips and skills that are out there. Next week, I’ll officially be six months into “The Journey to Grow Out My Grays,” and let me tell you…it’s been hard! It’s been even tougher than growing out my brows, which is sort of counter-intuitive, right? Because I’m not actually doing anything… The hair is doing all the work. I’m just living my life, but dang if it hasn’t been a test of will and a test of my mental state. Ah, man!
Yet again, I came *this close* to dying my hair, because, to be honest, I’m still not loving it… I don’t want to say that I “hate” it, because there are definitely some aspects that I like, like the freedom from not feeling like I have to go get my roots done every few weeks, and not always feeling like my hair is in a transitional state. Estée Lauder Double Wear Instant Fix Concealer 24H Concealer + Hydra Prep ($28, available in 22 shades) is a dual-ended situation with a brush-on moisturizer on one end and a medium-coverage liquid concealer on the other, and it’s made for dry skin with fine lines… HELLO, YOU TALKING TO ME?! LOL. I like it because the moisturizer smooths everything out and plumps the skin. It’s kinda slippery and silicone-y feeling, and similar to MAC Fast Response Eye Cream, which is famous for under-eye concealer prep. The concealer chills on top where it hides shadows and dark areas, and it does this without looking leathery after a few hours (again, very similar to another MAC Product — their old-school Select Moisturecover Concealer). No likey ‘ze crepe-y concealer? This concealer combo is your dawg. I do feel like the 24HR claim is a stretch, because it fades a little by the end of the day, but eh — I’d rather have a little bit of fading than a little caking and heavy concealer all up in my experience lines. via http://bit.ly/2XAtbfq So…what is the Monday Poll? Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start.
1. What are the names of your furbabies, and how did they acquire their monikers?
“Tabs” is short of “Fussy Tabby,” which was the first name we gave him he earned, but it didn’t quite stick. For a while, he was also “FT” (further shortened from “Fussy Tabby”), and that morphed into “Tabs.” 2. Have you ever worn a celebrity scent, and if so, which ones? I’ve worn a few… Don’t laugh! Some of them are pretty good. I actually really loved Britney Spears’ Midnight Fantasy, the bedazzled Britney Spears one. I wore that religiously for a couple months. 3. Your favorite/least favorite types of cheese? Favorites: fresh mozzarella, brie and any cheddar with bite. Oh, and cream cheese. (Does that even count as a cheese?) Least favorites: Swiss…although I do like the holes, go figure. When his fur stylist didn’t show up for work today, Tabs took it upon himself to head over to her house to demand her professional attention, but she wouldn’t even answer the door. She was also in violation of basic cat assistant construction etiquette by installing her doorbell more than 24 inches off the ground, but I digress… We’ve said it a thousand times before, but it’s so true. Good help is hard to find, especially help that will show up to work at the crack of dawn on Easter Sunday. Despite his fur stylist’s poor work ethic, Tabs still dazzled the neighborhood this morning and strutted his stuff in his latest custom couture creation, the Easter Springtime Delights kitty collar. Year after year, he continues to stun. Tabs hopes that you have a happy Easter, as long as it doesn’t interfere with your pet assistant duties. ? It’s all about priorities, y’all. Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, Karen via http://bit.ly/2Zpw4RT So…guess what? For the first time in forever, I put on heels AND a dress to leave my house. Yup, BOTH. I know! I can’t even remember the last time I did that when it didn’t involve some kind of event, but I did it yesterday before going to the dentist, because I was actually feeling kinda feisty and, well…kinda cute, which never happens to me prior to leaving for the dentist. To make a long story even longer, I did some yoga (a 10-minute flow; that’s the routine down below) before leaving for the appointment, and that just made me feel a little better and less anxious than usual — actually, almost enthusiastic (!) about seeing the dentist. Anyway, feeling really good about myself, I put on my dress, my heels, got in the car, got on the freeway, and that’s when I realized that my knees and shins were hella dry. (Don’t ask me why I realized this on the freeway.) I totally forgot to put on lotion before leaving the house… I know! When you don’t wear a dress in forever and you’re out of practice, you forget these things. What’s your routine for washing your face? Do you use micellar water? Makeup wipes? Do you use a washcloth? I know everybody does it a little differently. For me, in the morning, I wash my face right after I wake up, and how I do it depends on how my skin feels. I’ve been using a retinol at night (Kate Somerville’s), and I’m trying to ramp up to using it three nights a week (Slowly… It’s taking forever because my skin’s just freaking out left and right), but if my face isn’t feeling too dry or sensitive in the morning, I’ll use Clinique’s creamy cleanser — the one in the green tube (sorry, I’m blanking on the name right now). I’ll massage that on to my dry skin, then take a warm, clean washcloth and use that to wipe it away. Then, I’ll turn the water so it’s ice cold and splash my face a few times, because that really helps me wake me. And then on the mornings when my skin feels super dry and tight or otherwise uncomfortable, I’ll splash my face with lukewarm water and gently blot it dry with a towel. Continue reading "What’s Your Routine for Washing Your Face?" on Makeup and Beauty Blog. via http://bit.ly/2PmpeIb Girlfriend, THIS IS TOTALLY A THING. People are getting their scalps injected with Botox to make their scalp perspire less, and therefore help their blowouts last longer. As someone who used to pride herself on how long she could tolerate going between hair washes — seriously, there was a time in my life when I could gleefully go six days without washing my hair — this may have appealed to me more at one time than it does now. If nothing else, I would’ve SERIOUSLY considered it, but I don’t think I would have gone through with it because I don’t like needles… They freak me out. Also, knowing me, if I did get a scalp injection, it would probably leave me with a twitchy left eyelid for six months. I would’ve been better off just living with 12 pounds of dry shampoo in my hair, which is what I used to do. Now, I’m an everyday hair washer… Yeah, I know, but my hair isn’t dyed anymore. I’m transitioning back to my natural color, so I don’t really have to worry about hair color fading, which is one good thing about growing out your grays. via http://bit.ly/2UHeVEq Meet some of my favorite MAC nude shades this week from the MAC Strip Down collection. I’m a bonafide twig expert! — self proclaimed, of course. I have twigs in every pocket of every jacket. Literally. And there are two reasons for this:
So, yeah, with the power vested in me by the State of California, I declare myself a twig expert. ? MAC Twig is such an old-school favorite. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it is not the color of most tiny branches. Really, I don’t know why it’s even called “Twig,” unless somebody somewhere had a dream about a pinkish brown tree…? Yeah, it’s in the realm of brown, but I think it’s more pink than brown, so if you like the idea of a nude lip color that splits the difference between a Barbie pink and a true brown, a la MAC Paramount, take a look at Twig. In this new series, we talk about sweet finds you can get for $10 or less. GAH. I’m getting really antsy to paint my nails with the Chanel Cruise colors. (That purple? It’s just calling my name.) So I’m gonna do that tonight, but before I go there, shout-out to my current nail polish situation, Sally Hansen’s Miracle Gel in Mauve-olous, which is indeed marvelous. OK, this is… I painted my nails on Friday night after one of those epic bathroom sessions that El Hub makes fun of me for, because I literally can spend almost two hours in the bathroom after I put Connor down to bed. He’s like, “What are you DOING in there? Did you fall in the toilet and get stuck? Now you can’t get out?” (Side note, no, that only happens to my Velvet Teddy Lipstick, ha! ? ) And I’m like, “Dude, I’m just living my best life in here, OK?” I was so happy to have some time to myself, so in celebration of that, I did a hair mask, a face mask, and I also painted my nails. ?? I did two coats of Mauve-olous on top of bare nails, and then the Miracle Gel Top Coat on top, which is the process Sally Hansen recommends, and look! via http://bit.ly/2ZmrhQW |
